6th SÃO PAULO INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

General Architects’ Exhibition
REGULATIONS

Fundação Bienal de São Paulo
Brazilian Institute of Architects

OPENING REMARKS

Article 1 – This segment aims at showcasing the current production by Brazilian and Foreign architects and will constitute the core of the debate on the architects’ contribution in all fields of professional pursuit: architecture, urbanism, design, landscaping, visual communication, interior architecture, etc.

The subjects of the works selected for display must be, in one way or another, connected with the theme “LIVING IN THE CITY: Reality, Architecture, Utopia”.

The proposed theme for the 6th BIA, given its depth and coprehensiveness, will enable not only architects and urbanists, but all sectors of modern society to debate and ponder the conflicts implied in the challenging art of living in today’s modern cities, particularly in bustling metropolitan areas.
This issue will be tackled through a reflection on how architecture erects cities where the act of Living is conceived in close relationship with the dwelling’s porportions. An urban dwelling nowadays comprises not only the house itself but its extensions. Not to mention the gamut of essential urban appliances. The result is a sort of living inextricably intertwined with the actual city, with its unruly growth dictated by the pressures of the population’s novel demands which are, in turn, brought about by the swift changes society has been undergoing. These real needs of today’s society help to drive and encourage the cities’ growth, often unattended by official laws, too sluggish to keep up with the speed of transformations. It is only when the real city is fully accepted in its actuality that a deeper insight into the mechanisms behind the development of the urban masses will be gained.
Ultimately, Utopia means the city as it is idealized in thought. And it becomes a necessity, if we are to clear new paths towards the city’s sustained growth, while finetuned to its potential impact on the natural environment, a crucial issue facing mankind nowadays.
Utopia also works as a powerful lever for our civilization’s progress. Any city lacking in utopias to guide its development will hardly be able to grow in harmony.
Architecture can be found in between them, intent on bridging the gap between Reality and Utopia, and finding solutions to today’s problems without losing sight of the future. Architecture also demonstrates that urban spaces can be organized by balancing the chaos and the contradicitons plaguing our cities. And that is no easy task nowadays.
